Understanding Dimensions of Engineering Wellness
Intellectual Wellness focuses on exploring creative ways to expand your knowledge and skills.
Focusing on your intellectual wellness can look like:
- Getting involved with Volunteering at Columbia Community Service supported nonprofits.
- Joining an on-campus or off-campus organization that focuses on academic growth.
- Exploring the opportunities provided by Arts at Columbia that gives students an avenue to explore performances, events, galleries, libraries, and other resources in the city.
Occupational Wellness focuses on the ability to pursue personal fulfillment from our jobs and organizations while nurturing balance in our life.
Practical ways to focus on your occupational wellness are:
- Join one of our engineering organizations
- Work with the Office of Outreach to help connect with and learn from the community
- Explore the Columbia Engineering Graduate Career Placement (GCP) and connect with your Department Graduate Career Placement Officer. From recruiting partnerships with global organizations to on-campus career placement to professional development sessions, the GCP Centre connects and educates our talented Engineers and Scientists with employers
- Attending and learning from The Professional Development and Leadership (PDL) sessions. The PDL program’s goal is to enhance the Columbia Engineering education experience by providing enrichment and development opportunities
Financial Wellness focuses on managing money in the most economical manner possible and finding a balance between spending and saving.
Practical ways to focus on your financial wellness are:
- Increase your financial literacy by creating and living on a budget
- Learning how to Meal Prep
- Attend free events around the city

Physical Wellness focuses on forming a balanced quality of life while listening to what our body needs to be energized and in good health.
Focusing on your physical wellness can look like:
- Getting enough sleep. Visit Columbia Health for more information on sleep
- Exercising. Learn more by visiting the Dodge Physical Education and Recreation Center for more information on amenities, classes, and programs.
- Taking yoga classes or joining us for yoga at Engineering Wellness!
Emotional Wellness focuses on learning to identify and respond to feelings in order to navigate life’s challenges and transitions.
Focusing on your emotional wellness can look like:
- Reaching out to Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS), which supports the psychological and emotional well-being of the Columbia campus community by providing counseling, consultation, and crisis intervention — all of which adhere to strict standards of confidentiality.
- Exploring Columbia Health self-help and crisis intervention resources for coping with stress, anxiety, and other concerns.
- Journaling and creating a mood tracker to better understand and express your emotions.
- Exploring Go Ask Alice! to view thousands of answered questions on health and well-being topics ranging from substance use to sexual health, to nutrition and physical activity.
Cultural Wellness focuses on the ability to maintain, value and interact with cultural identities. Being culturally well means appreciating diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives, fostering an inclusive environment that promotes respect, understanding, and personal growth.
Social Wellness involves building healthy, nurturing and supportive relationships as well as fostering a genuine connection with one’s community.
Practical ways to focus on your social wellness are:
- Joining the Engineering Student Council (EGSC) and attending one of our EGSC socials to connect with other students
- Attend events organized by Graduate Student Affairs. From Broadway shows to cooking classes and sporting events, find out more via the weekly ESA newsletter and Instagram account!
- Join a student organization
Spiritual Wellness focuses on expanding one’s sense of purpose and meaning in life through practices that foster inner peace and connection with what is significant or sacred.
Focusing on your spiritual wellness can look like:
- Meditation
- Join organizations and/or activities that align with your beliefs or values
- Practice mindfulness
- Deep Breathing exercises
- Meditation, Relaxation, and Guided Practice
- Visiting The Office of Religious Life that exists to support faith communities at Columbia. At their Earl Hall office students can talk to religious life advisers, explore student organizations focused on religious beliefs, attend meetings and services, and use prayer and meditation spaces.
